MUNCIE, IN — A third local attorney, and second Republican, has announced plans to run for judge of Delaware Circuit Court 5 in next year’s election cycle.
Ben Freeman said he will be a candidate for judge in the May 2026 Republican primary.
“It has been a real privilege to live, work and raise a family in Delaware County over the past 10 years,” Freeman said in a release. “This community is special and its members have made it feel like home. With focus, hard work, and a little luck, I will help maintain and improve Delaware County as a safe place to live, work and raise a family.”
Born and raised in Jay County, Freeman later moved with his family to Albany. He graduated from Ohio Northern University in 2009. He completed his law degree at the University of Dayton School of law in 2014, where he graduated magna cum laude.
Freeman joined the Muncie law firm Beasley & Gilkison in November 2014 as an associate and has been a partner with the law firm since 2019.
Freeman has been serving as a member of the Muncie city attorney’s office under Mayor Dan Ridenour since 2020. He has also served as Delaware County Council attorney since 2022.
Freeman maintains a civil law practice in Muncie serving Delaware County and East Central Indiana.
Freeman said his candidacy has been endorsed by state Sen. Scott Alexander, Delaware County commissioner Stephen Brand, Delaware County Council President Eugene Whitehead, Delaware County Council member Brad Bookout, Ridenour, Delaware County Sheriff Tony Skinner and Muncie Police Chief Nathan Sloan.
Thomas Cannon Jr., a Democrat, is not expected to seek a fourth six-year term as Delaware Circuit Court 5 judge in next year’s election.
In recent days, two other attorneys — Deputy Prosecutor Maricel Driscoll, a Democrat, and Republican Timothy Hollems, a master commissioner in the local court system — have announced plans to run for judge of Circuit Court 5.
