With Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams on the cover of “Madden NFL 27,” there is a sense of excitement surrounding the football world as one of its most exciting players is on the most legendary sports video game of all time.
There is only one reason, however, to pause when you think about this news. It is the long-time worry about the “Madden Curse.” This comes from the idea that whoever is on the cover of Madden will either get hurt the following year or not play as well. There is some truth to the fact, as this has coincidentally happened in the past, but it’s nothing for the Bears to worry about.
For one, regardless of how things went that particular season, stars like Tom Brady, Patrick Mahomes, and Josh Allen, among many others, have been on the cover. If Williams continues following in those types of footsteps, his career will be a massive success.
Since his time in college, Williams has been known as a “tough” player. It would take a lot for him to come out of a game. Even in his rookie year, when his coach and offensive line let him down in a big way, he found a way to play. With a significantly better head coach and offensive line, he thrived.
That offensive line is mostly intact heading into the summer, and Ben Johnson is only going to help him improve further, so regression isn’t a worry either. There is a world where the Bears play better but have a slightly worse record for other variables, but Madden will have had nothing to do with it.
Despite the worry surrounding the “Madden Curse,” plenty of factors make it clear that this isn’t something to stress about at this time. Johnson won’t let anything linger, which is the most important thing to remember when evaluating anything to do with the Bears.
