What Ben Johnson said about Caleb Williams' operation vs. Eagles

Chicago Bears head coach Ben Johnson provided a brutally honest assessment of the passing game on Monday, where he made it clear it’s not where it needs to be. And while it captured the headlines, Johnson was actually very complimentary towards quarterback Caleb Williams.

Although the accuracy has not been there for where both sides would like it to be, Johnson said the second-year signal caller ran a smooth operation in the win over the Philadelphia Eagles. This week, Johnson not only gave his quarterback big praise, but he also credited Williams for correcting him when there was an incorrect play call.

“I think what you don’t see is how smooth that operation was on Friday. Maybe you do, I certainly noticed it,” Johnson said Monday. “I thought that was one of the better jobs he’s had in terms of getting the play call, calling it in the huddle, getting the motions, the shifts. We had a lot of moving parts there in that game to create some eye candy for those defensive players, and I thought he executed it really well for the most part.

“I screwed up a play call and he made it right for me. And so, that was good to see. He’s getting better each and every week in that regard of playing the quarterback position. Like I said, it’s all hands-on deck for us to clean up this passing game to make it more of a weapon.”

As they’ve already turned around the run game, if Chicago can also make progress in the passing game, they’ll truly elevate their offense to a potential dynamic level. It’s no secret that there is plenty of room for Williams to grow in his second NFL season, and first under his new head coach, but there are still plenty of positives we’re seeing.
