On Tuesday night, the USC men’s basketball team went on the road to Eugene and defeated Oregon 82-77. With the victory, the Trojans improved to 8-0 on the season and started off 1-0 in Big Ten play.
What did we learn from the game? Here are a few key takeaways:
BIG statement
After starting out the season 7-0 in nonconference play, USC entered the top 25 for the first time in more than two years. Tuesday night, however, was the Trojans’ first opportunity to prove themselves against Big Ten competition this season. Consider test number one passed.
Overdue Duck roast
This marked USC’s first victory over Oregon since February 2022. Prior to Tuesday, the Trojans had lost five straight in a series that has continued across two conferences.
Chad steps up
With Rodney Rice out for the second game in a row, Chad Baker-Mazara once again stepped up, recording 25 points, four rebounds, three assists, and three steals. It was the second consecutive game scoring more than 20 points for Baker-Mazara, and his fourth of the season. The Auburn transfer has hit double figures in every game this year.
Establishing an identity
Over the past few games, USC has begun to establish its identity as a strong rebounding team. The Trojans once again controlled the glass Tuesday, outrebounding Oregon 35-27.
Up next
USC will return to Galen Center on Saturday for its first Big Ten home game of the season against Washington. The game will mark the return of old friends Desmond Claude to Galen Center. Tipoff is set for 3:00 p.m. on Big Ten Network.
