Rock Valley College is building a stronger college and a stronger Rockford | Opinion

For more than 60 years, Rock Valley College has proudly stood as your community’s college.

From the beginning, our mission has been clear: to provide accessible, high-quality education that meets the needs of the people of this region.

Reflecting on our history, I am struck by how deeply RVC has grown with and for Rockford and the surrounding communities.

Our story is one of constant evolution. RVC has prepared generations of students through strong liberal arts and science programs, giving them the foundation to transfer to four-year institutions. At the same time, we have built nationally recognized career and technical programs that fuel our local workforce. From advanced manufacturing and aviation to healthcare and cyber security, our alumni have the skills and credentials employers demand.

In addition to countless transfer and articulation agreements, we have two bachelor’s degree programs on our Main Campus: Nursing with OSF College of Nursing and Engineering with Northern Illinois University. These opportunities allow talented students to stay rooted in Rockford while pursuing a world-class education.

Academics are only part of the RVC story.

We are also proud to be home to the award-winning RVC Starlight Theatre, which will celebrate 60 years of enriching the cultural life of our community next summer, and to our Division II NJCAA athletics programs, which foster school pride while developing student-athletes of character and resilience.

Through it all, one thing has remained constant: our ability to adapt and respond to the changing needs of our community.

Today, more traditional college-age students than ever before are choosing RVC as their first choice for higher education. At the same time, adult learners are returning to our classrooms, whether to retool for new careers, gain advanced credentials, or finish what they started years ago.

We also know that talent is everywhere, but opportunity is not.

That’s why we are deeply committed to ensuring that funding is never a barrier to education. Each year, the RVC Foundation awards nearly $750,000 in scholarships, opening doors for hundreds of students to pursue their dreams and complete their education.

As we look to the future, our commitment to being our community’s college is only deepening.

A significant next step in our journey will be our expansion into downtown Rockford. With a new campus presence at the heart of the city, RVC will be even more accessible to more people, removing barriers and creating opportunities for those who need it most. We want to meet students where they live, work, and dream, and we intend to be there alongside them, offering education, resources, and support to help them succeed.

This is not just a college initiative. It is a community investment.

By bringing higher education downtown, RVC is strengthening the city center, supporting workforce development, and ensuring that education remains the great equalizer for future generations.

Our past six decades tell a story of resilience, innovation, and unwavering commitment to Rockford and the region we serve. The future promises even more.

With the continued support of our partners, our alumni, and our community, Rock Valley College will remain a beacon of access, excellence, and opportunity for the next 60 years and beyond.

Together, we are building not just a stronger college but a stronger Rockford. I am proud to say that Rock Valley College is strong because our community is strong. Together, we are ready for our next chapter.
