Travel deal company Dunhill Travel ranked the best states for an affordable road trip in 2025, and Illinois did not fare well.
The ranking factored in gas prices, road conditions, hotel costs and more and found that Illinois was the worst state to plan a trip in.
Here’s a breakdown of the findings.
Is Illinois a good state to road trip in?
It’s actually the worst, according to Dunhill Travel. The company not only analyzed affordability, but also attractions, culture and access to national parks across the lower 48 states.
Illinois was ranked 48th.
Though the state doesn’t have the most expensive hotel and gas prices, they are surely some of the highest in the country, behind states like California and New York.
Illinois also has very few traditional National Park Service sites; a relatively small number of annual national park visits; and a low density of arts, entertainment and recreational spaces.
Beyond this, the state’s roads have been reported to be some of the worst in the nation.
