Peoria man sentenced to prison after shooting person, robbing him in 2023

A Peoria man was sentenced to 30 years in prison Wednesday after he robbed a man and shot him, causing serious injuries in the process.

Drakar K. Munoz, 28, had been found guilty of armed robbery and aggravated battery with a firearm in June for his role in the robbery of a man at Parkwood Commons Apartments in August 2023. The man suffered gunshot wounds to his stomach and also had a cross-body bag stolen from him during this robbery.

According to the Peoria County State’s Attorney’s Office, Munoz and his partner in the robbery, Jimmy Williams, met the man in the Parkwood Commons parking lot on Aug. 15, 2023. The trio spoke briefly before Munoz pulled out a gun and pointed it at the man. Williams also took the cross-body bag the man was wearing. Munoz shot the man twice before he and Williams fled the scene.

Williams pleaded guilty to armed robbery charges last April, receiving an eight-year prison sentence.

During Wednesday’s sentencing hearing, Peoria County Circuit Judge Stephen Kouri sentenced Munoz to 30 years in prison on the armed robbery – to be served at 50% – and 20 years on aggravated battery – served at 85%.

Both sentences will be served concurrently.
