New COVID variant, 'Nimbus,' making up 43% of new US cases, and it's in Illinois

A new COVID-19 variant, NB.1.8.1 – nicknamed “Nimbus” – is rapidly emerging as one of the most common strains in the U.S.

According to the CDC, as of late June, NB.1.8.1 made up 43% of COVID-19 cases nationwide.

What is NB.1.8.1?

NB.1.8.1 is a recent offshoot of the LP.8.1 variant, which has been dominant in recent months. It was first detected in China in January and has now spread to at least 22 countries, according to USA TODAY. Virologists describe Nimbus as a “slightly upgraded” version of its predecessor. While there is no evidence it causes more severe disease, it appears to be highly transmissible.

Has NB.1.8.1 been detected in Illinois?

Yes. According to the World Health Network and Global Initiative on Sharing All Influenza Data, NB.1.8.1 has been detected in Illinois, along with at least 17 other U.S. states including California, New Jersey, and New York.

Reported symptoms of NB.1.8.1 are similar to other COVID-19 strains, but one distinctive complaint is a severe sore throat, sometimes described as “razor-blade throat fatigue.” Other symptoms may include:
