Ben Johnson helped take the Chicago Bears from worst to first in his first season as head coach, and his coaching staff played a key role in the turnaround. That includes defensives backs coach Al Harris, who’s one of the young, rising names in coaching circles.
Harris garnered several looks at defensive coordinator this offseason, which included interviews with the Green Bay Packers and Washington Commanders. Luckily, Chicago will get Harris for at least another season in what’s going to be a new-look secondary with a good number of new faces, especially at safety.
New Bears safety Coby Bryant, who signed a three-year, $40 million deal, believes in the winning culture that Johnson has established in Chicago. But he’s also excited to get to work with Harris, who helped lead the Bears to a NFL-best 23 interceptions, including Kevin Byard’s league-high seven.
“I couldn’t stop smiling honestly,” Bryant said of the thought of working with Harris. “The guys that he previously worked with had seven plus interceptions, so I look forward to that for sure.”
Bryant, who converted from cornerback to safety with the Seattle Seahawks just a couple of seasons ago, played a key role in the Seahawks’ Super Bowl run. He totaled 66 tackles, four interceptions, seven pass breakups and one forced fumble. Now, Bryant is going to get an opportunity to show his ballhawk prowess in Dennis Allen’s defense, and working with Harris should only help him become even better.
