SPRINGFIELD — The Illinois State Police and the Sangamon County Coroner have confirmed that a pedestrian was struck and killed by an ISP trooper near the intersection of South Sixth Street and Linton Avenue on the far south side of Springfield around 2:30 a.m. April 25.
The identity of the pedestrian, a 45-year-old man from Springfield, was being withheld pending notification of family, said Coroner Jim Allmon.
An autopsy was scheduled for April 27.
According to a news release from ISP, the trooper was traveling southbound on Sixth Street in the middle lane and approaching a green light at the intersection of Sixth and Linton.
A pedestrian was reportedly bent down in the roadway when the trooper’s squad car struck him. The trooper rendered aid until an ambulance arrived on scene.
The pedestrian was taken to Springfield Memorial Hospital and pronounced dead by emergency room staff at 3:12 a.m., Allmon said.
Trooper Jayme Bufford, a public information officer with ISP, said special agents of the ISP’s Division of Internal Investigation are investigating this crash. That was in accordance with the Police and Community Relations Improvement Act and ISP law.
The trooper’s name was not made public.
ISP is processing evidence and conducting interviews surrounding the crash. Upon completion of the investigation, all evidence and facts will be submitted for review to the Sangamon County State’s Attorney’s Office.
