Harlem-Roscoe firefighter, 53, died of natural causes, coroner says

The Winnebago County Coroner’s Office has identified the Harlem-Roscoe Firefighter who died while on duty as 53-year-old Firefighter-Paramedic John Morgan of Caledonia.

After an autopsy, his cause and manner of death were determined to be natural, according to information from the coroner’s office.

Morgan was on duty May 31 at Harlem-Roscoe Fire Department Station No. 3, 13974 Willowbrook Road in Roscoe when he began to feel ill. His shift partner found him unresponsive and not breathing in a bathroom at about 9:20 p.m.

Morgan was assessed and determined to be beyond resuscitation, the information release said.

Personnel from the Winnebago County Coroner’s Office pronounced Morgan dead at 10:03 p.m.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with Mr. Morgan’s family and friends, as well as the members of the Harlem-Roscoe Fire Department,” the coroner’s release said. “Mr. Morgan will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.”
