Former Elgin police officer convicted of Loves Park domestic battery

A former Elgin police sergeant has been found guilty of aggravated domestic battery and domestic battery in a Boone County court.

Boone County State’s Attorney Tricia L. Smith announced April 8 that former Elgin police sergeant Robert Hartman, 53, of Durand, was found guilty of one count of aggravated domestic battery, a class 2 felony, and five counts of domestic battery, each a class A misdemeanor.

According to a news release, the charges stem from a March 23, 2022 incident in Loves Park incident whereHartman punched, kicked, and strangled his then-girlfriend during a prolonged altercation at his home.

Hartman’s sentencing is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. June 10.

The charges are probationable, the release states, however the mandatory minimum is 60 days jail.
