One of the biggest criticisms around Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams, the only major criticism, has been his low completion percentage through his first two NFL seasons.
When the Bears hired head coach Ben Johnson, he made it clear that he was going to rebuild Williams from the ground up, understanding that it would be a process to take the quarterback’s development to the next level. In that rebuilding, behind a new-look offensive line, Williams saw the amount of sacks he took decrease from 68 in his rookie year to just 24 in 2025.
But his completion percentage took a dip. Even with the high amount of success that the Bears had as a team in Johnson’s first year, Williams saw his completion percentage go from 62.5% to 58.1%, neither number reaching a bar that is where the quarterback or head coach would like it to be.
During an interview with Kay Adams on the “Up and Adams Show” on Monday, Williams revealed just how serious he and his head coach are taking the misses, sharing that he sat down with Johnson to go over every single incompletion from last year.
“We grabbed a couple of waters, we ate there, we sat down and figured out if it was a catchable pass or not,” Williams said. “We figured out if there was anything better I could do to help the receivers, obviously there are times when guys just drop the ball but more often than not it’s just looking inward and it starts with myself. Going from there it’s about finding ways through practice, individual drills, offseason, to get better and build confidence so when it gets to the season, I’m not thinking, I’m not late to stuff, I’m delivering a catchable ball to the guys.”
Williams added that, at the end of his meeting with Johnson, he asked his coach to keep pushing him, which was happy obliged by Johnson. The Bears’ most important figures to success on the field are joined at the hip going into their second year together, and most importantly, they’re identifying and working to fix the factors that held back Williams during 2025.
