The start of the Ben Johnson era didn’t yield positive results for the Chicago Bears in their 27-24 loss to the Minnesota Vikings, which featured a blown fourth-quarter lead in prime time in front of their home fans.
Following an impressive 10-play, 61-yard scoring drive to open the season, which culminated in a Caleb Williams touchdown run, it was all downhill for the offense. They mustered just 10 points for the remainder of the game, including a touchdown in the final minute, and pre-snap penalties were drive killers as the offense lacked rhythm.
It got to the point where the home crowd started booing following failed drives, and the boos rang the loudest after Chicago allowed three fourth-quarter touchdowns and the offense couldn’t muster enough for a win. Following the game, Johnson was asked about fans booing the team after their frustrating loss. And the first-year head coach had the perfect response that showcased his dedication to turning the Bears back into winners.
“That’s the beauty of this city,” Johnson said, via Chris Emma. “They love their sports. I embrace it. That’s a big reason why I wanted to come here, these people care. … They want a winner.”
Johnson made it clear, once he accepted the head coach job, that he wanted to remain in this competitive NFC North division and held turn this team back into a winning franchise, which he was instrumental in doing during his time with the Detroit Lions.
Johnson understands fans frustrations with the product out on the field in Monday night’s loss. And he’s committed to giving fans the winning product they desire. It’s going to require patience, but Johnson is determined to bring a winner back to Chicago.
