The Chicago Bears had plenty of success as an offensive team behind first-year head coach Ben Johnson last season, but after an 11-win season that included their first playoff win since 2010, the team is still pushing for more success and growth.
Heading into the second year of Johnson’s leadership and offense, the Bears’ lead man believes there is even more evolution coming on that side of the ball, looking to do more with quarterback Caleb Williams, who’s coming off a breakout sophomore season.
During an interview with Kay Adams on Monday, Johnson discussed how his plans for the Bears offense will continue to grow, including more potential shotgun formation for Williams this season.
“Each team is different, I think you can [also] have success going from the gun or the pistol formation,” Johnson said. “There’s just things that we kind of hang our hat on in the running game that trickles out into play action pass and movement series, that I think Caleb does a really good job of. It fits us and what we do, yet we’re going to continue to evolve and morph as well, maybe that does mean a little more shotgun this year. I do think being under center is a big part of what we did a year ago and so far in camp, it’s looked pretty good.”
The Bears took a big step on offense in the first year of Ben Johnson and Caleb Williams working together, and if the duo can unlock more levels of unique looks on offense, they can take the next step in Johnson’s system.
Chicago’s franchise and fanbase have long awaited the time for which the team had a high-powered offense, and it sounds like there’s more development and potential ready to be unlocked this upcoming season.
