The Chicago Bears defense suffered a blow when safety Coby Bryant suffered a left knee injury during Monday’s padded practice. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that Bryant suffered a hyperextended knee, bone bruise and small fracture that’s expected to sideline him 8-10 weeks.
But Bears coach Ben Johnson had some interesting comments about the timetable for Bryant’s return, noting that they’re still in the “information gathering” phase regarding the extent of his injury and how long he’ll be sidelined.
“I don’t know where you guys got that,” Johnson said of the reported 8-10 week timeline. “Hasn’t been said here. I’ll let you guys know whenever we know for sure what it looks like for him.”
The hope is Johnson’s comments indicate that the Bears might be optimistic that Bryant could return sooner than that reported timetable, which would be huge for Chicago’s defense. With the reported 8-10 week timetable, Bryant could make his return as soon as Week 3 and as late as Week 5.
With Bryant sidelined, the Bears have been working veteran Cam Lewis at safety opposite rookie Dillon Thieneman. Lewis had been competing for the nickel cornerback job with Jaylon Jones as Kyler Gordon remains sidelined. Johnson said there is “no update” on a timetable for Gordon’s return as he continues to rehab.
