The Chicago Bears are reportedly adding to their defensive end room midway through training camp. According to CBS Sports’ Matt Zenitz, the Bears are expected to sign veteran Marcus Davenport, who visited the team over the weekend.
Davenport, a 2018 first-round pick with the New Orleans Saints, reunites with Bears defensive coordinator Dennis Allen. The two were together for five seasons in New Orleans, and Davenport had his best seasons under his old coach. From 2018 through 2022, Davenport totaled 21.5 sacks and 25 tackles for loss.
Since then, he has bounced around the NFC North. He spent the 2023 season with the Minnesota Vikings before joining the Detroit Lions for the last two seasons. Over the previous three years, Davenport has had minimal impact, producing 3.5 sacks and three tackles for loss while battling injuries. Interestingly enough, his lone sack in 2025 came against quarterback Caleb Williams and the Bears in Week 2.
The Bears are hoping Davenport can find a spark once again under Allen while providing valuable depth behind Montez Sweat, Austin Booker, and Dayo Odeyingbo. The Bears are also still without 2025 second-round pick Shemar Turner, who remains in the physically unable to perform (PUP) list, which could explain the decision to bring in Davenport.
