Throughout the offseason, there was speculation about whether the Chicago Bears would trade backup quarterback Tyson Bagent. While they ended up keeping him on the roster for now, there is still a chance he gets traded sometime during the season even though he is signed with Chicago through 2027.
With head coach Ben Johnson resting most of the starters, including quarterback Caleb Williams, Bagent got the start in Chicago’s preseason game against the Cleveland Browns. He played the entire first half, and while the Bears did not score in the first quarter, they did put up 10 points in the second quarter, including a 25-yard touchdown from Bagent to wide receiver Maurice Alexander.
Following the touchdown, the Bears defense was able to force a three-and-out and get the ball back with just about half of the quarter left. Bagent led the Bears 11 plays down the field to the Cleveland 41 yard-line before throwing an ugly interception that he should have known better than to throw given he is going into his fourth year in the NFL.
“That is just me being extremely late,” Bagent said. “Complete sloppy move on my part. Gotta be better there. I think one less hitch will get the job done. Or even just move on. Move onto the next progression or throw it in the dirt. But by all means, don’t throw an interception.”
Bagent rebounded from the pick, leading the Bears on a 10-play, 53-yard drive with 1:24 left in the first half. Despite being sacked for a loss of 11 yards with under 30 seconds left in the half, kicker Cairo Santos was able to make the 51-yard field goal to allow the Bears to get points right at the end of the half and tie the game 10-10 going into halftime. They would score another 24 unanswered points in the second half to get the 34-10 victory.
