Burns’ vehicle re-entered Story Street and collided head-on with a 2020 Ford Edge driven by Jessica Slaton of Madrid, who was northbound near the intersection with Kate Shelly Drive.

Burns died from injuries sustained in the accident, the Iowa State Patrol said. Authorities did not say why Burns lost control of his vehicle.

A three-year-old in the Ford Edge was airlifted with life-threatening injuries, while a seven-month-old was taken to the local Boone County Hospital.

The Iowa State Patrol did not have an update on the condition of the children as of 9:30 a.m., Monday, Aug. 17.

The accident remains under investigation.
