Bears DT Neville Gallimore explains his success in run defense

The Chicago Bears entered free agency with needs across the defensive line, and that remains the case heading into the 2026 NFL Draft. But Chicago did address depth at defensive tackle, including the signing of Neville Gallimore to a two-year, $12 million deal.

Gallimore, who had a career year with the Indianapolis Colts in 2025, will serve as a key rotational piece behind Gervon Dexter and Grady Jarrett — and there might be another big name in the mix depending on how Chicago approaches the draft. One of the things that Gallimore should provide for the Bears is support in run defense, where he’s notably thrived.

Last season, Chicago was one of the worst run defenses in the NFL, allowing 131.4 yards per game. Run support and pass rush remain the two biggest concerns on defense following a 2025 season where the defense led the NFL in takeaways (33). Gallimore can be an asset against the run, and it’s something he takes pride in.

“Being able to be effective throughout any position on the defensive line. I think my effort and my desire to compete at a high level; I think it speaks volumes,” Gallimore said. “That’s something that I take pride in. Apart from obviously being effective as a D-lineman, I think the effort and desire to be at a hundred percent and not take plays off. I think that’s something that I take pride in. That has carried me up to this point. It’s been a part of my journey, and I think being here is great for that.”

The Bears have added several defensive tackles during free agency, including Gallimore, Kentavius Street and James Lynch, but they’re more depth pieces than starters. That could change in the NFL draft, where Chicago has four picks in the top 89 selections. And, considering it’s not necessarily a deep defensive tackle class, the Bears might opt to address the interior with the 25th overall pick and add to the group.
