Bears defense made life rough on Dolphins QB Tua Tagovailoa in joint practice

The Chicago Bears got their first taste of an opponent for the first time during training camp on Friday, as they hosted the Miami Dolphins for a joint practice ahead of Sunday’s preseason opener.

While Bears head coach Ben Johnson announced that quarterback Caleb Williams would not play in the team’s preseason game on Sunday, there was plenty of activity in Friday’s practice, especially on the defensive side.

Chicago’s defense was relentless against the Dolphins and quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, as they forced three interceptions on the day (before this practice, Tagovailoa had thrown just one all training camp), a performance that did not make Miami happy.

Offensive guard James Daniels, a former second-round pick of the Bears, was not happy with the performance of the Dolphins offensive line and vented his frustration after practice.

“There were times Tua was pressured a little bit more than I would like,” Daniels said after practice, via Joe Schad.

It’s a very good sign for the Bears, and their defense, to have the production and disruption they had in their first taste of opposition this year. Coaches and fans alike are undoubtedly hoping that the same can be replicated in live game action this season.

There has been a very obvious increase in physicality and high-level play in the beginning of training camp under their new head coach, and now the Bears need to keep the ball rolling.
