Peoria-area players in the Illinois Shrine Game

Farmington quarterback Lane Wheelwright, the Journal Star Player of the Year, leads Peoria-area players selected to play in the game. He is listed on the Blue roster along with other metro-area players Avery Grebner (Metamora), Amare Breedlove (Manual), Hudson Nutter (Pekin) and Sean Glover (Richwoods). Metro-area players listed on the Red roster include: Caden Mowen (Farmington) and Tory Kupferschmid (Eureka).

Annual award named after Peoria-area athlete

Each year since 2016, the Shriners give out the Darth Winkler Service Award — named after the former Lewistown football and track star who was the first Shriner to play in the all-star game. The former Journal Star Player of the Year died on Sept. 2, 2015 in an automobile accident in Wisconsin.
