Wrestling legend and reality star Hulk Hogan, who made wrestling history in Daytona Beach in 1996, died at his home in Clearwater, Florida, according to WWE, which confirmed the news July 24. He was 71.
Previously known as a babyface hero in the ring, Hogan shocked fans by his “heel turn” to a villain at the World Championship Wrestling’s Bash at the Beach event, which took place at the Ocean Center in 1996, and relaunched his career.
Known for his flamboyance and trademark blond horseshoe moustache, Hogan — born Terry Gene Bollea — lived much of his professional life in Florida, with residences in several locations including Brevard County, Miami, Tampa, and most recently Clearwater, according to The Florida Times-Union.
