The 2026 World Baseball Classic is off and running now that all four pools have begun play. Today, the contenders for the knockoff stage will start to take shape as the last of the 20 teams in the tournament finally take the field.
The United States began its quest for a second WBC title Friday night against Brazil. The betting favorite to hoist the trophy in Miami, Team USA will throw two-time reigning Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal of the Detroit Tigers in tonight’s showdown with Jazz Chisholm and Great Britain. Reigning champion Japan, who rode Shohei Ohtani’s grand slam to an easy 13-0 mercy-rule victory in its opener against Chinese Taipei, plays Korea in a game that could decide who challenges Australia for the Pool C crown. The Koreans play again late tonight against Chinese Taipei (it’ll be noon Sunday in Tokyo).
LoanDepot Park in Miami, which will host Aaron Judge and Team USA only if they make the semifinals, will see Israel make its WBC 2026 debut against Ronald Acuña Jr. and Venezuela. The star-studded team from the Dominican Republic have the day off after playing Nicaragua on March 6.
