Will TSA take your hair tools? What to know about the new travel ban on cordless devices

Whether you’re a frequent flyer or prepping for an upcoming trip, a new TSA rule could impact your packing — especially if you usually stash your hair tools in your checked bag to save space in your carry-on. It might be time to rethink your travel essentials.

As of August 15, the TSA, in coordination with the Federal Aviation Administration, has updated its list of prohibited items to include certain cordless hair styling tools. According to a report from TheStreet, these tools may contain potentially hazardous materials, making them unsafe for checked baggage.

Cordless curling irons with lithium batteries or powered by gas or butane are only allowed in carry-on bags, says Daniel Velez, a spokesperson for Florida’s TSA. He explains that it’s an FAA rule that both the TSA and airlines have to follow.”

So before you pack your favorite styling device, here’s what to know — including the three types that are now banned from checked luggage — so you can avoid surprises at security without sacrificing a great hair day while traveling.

The Federal Aviation Administration says that these kinds of cordless hair tools are banned, according to TheStreet:

What will happen to the cordless hair tools if they get are found by TSA inside a checked-in luggage?

Accroding to Velez, when a TSA officer detects a prohibited item “the officer gives the passenger some choices: putting the item in their checked bag (if allowed), giving the item to a friend/family member or putting it in their vehicle if possible and last but not least…surrender the item to continue” with their travels.

Can I take my cordless hair tools on a plane inside a carry-on luggage?

Yes. While cordless hair tools are banned from checked luggage, the FAA says they can still get packed in a carry-on bag. However, “a safety cover must be securely fitted over the heating element. The device must be protected from accidental activation.”

What kind of hair tools are allowed inside checked in luggage?

Hair tools with cords — such as curling irons or straighteners — that plug into an outlet are still allowed in carry-ons and checked luggage.

If both checked and carry-on bags are going to the same destination, why is it important for passengers to keep certain items in their carry-on rather than in checked luggage?

According to Daniel Velez, the spokesperson for Florida’s TSA, “Bottom line… If these items can catch fire in the cargo area where checked bags are transported, there’s no one there to put it out. That’s why they’re only allowed in carry-on bags.”

What other recent changes has the FAA made?

In addition to the enactment of the REAL ID requirement in May, earlier this year, TSA banned portable chargers and power banks with lithium-ion batteries from checked luggage, according to the FAA. Lithium batteries can pose a fire hazard and are subject to overheating and creating sparks, especially if damaged.
