Ben Hill Griffin Stadium, the home of the Florida Gators for 96 years, is among the most renowned college football venues in the nation. As the Swamp nears its 100th birthday, it remains one of the top-ranked places for the gridiron giants to grind it out on the grass.
When it comes to the Southeastern Conference, the stadium sits among the top of the rankings, according to USA TODAY Sports writer Blake Toppmeyer, who recently looked at all 16 SEC schools and their home venues. Steve Spurrier-Florida Field landed second on his list, just behind LSU’s Tiger Stadium.
“The Gators don’t back down at The Swamp,” Toppmeyer begins. “Consider last season: Florida went 4-2 at home, including an upset of Texas, and 0-6 away from the Swamp. The past 10 years, Florida has a .754 home winning clip, compared to .391 in road or neutral games. Florida fans singing Tom Petty in unison before the fourth quarter is peak college football.”
The ranking aligns with On3’s recent assessment, in which Ben Hill Griffin Stadium ranked No. 4 among college football venues nationwide, behind the Rose Bowl, Tiger Stadium and Beaver Stadium.
“It’s hot, it’s sticky and it’s intimidating to opposing teams,” the authors noted. “Florida’s football stadium was a death trap for opposing SEC teams in the days of Tim Tebow and Urban Meyer.”
The sports media are not the only ones hyping up the Gators’ home turf. Missouri Tigers head coach Eli Drinkwitz, who has faced the Orange and Blue twice at Florida Field, spoke highly of the venue at this summer’s SEC media days, calling it not just one of the best sports venues in the country but also across the globe.
“(H)ave you been to Ben Hill Griffin Stadium? It’s one of the top 15 stadiums in the world. In the world. If you have a ranking of top 15 stadiums in the world, Ben Hill Griffin Stadium is gonna be one of them.”
Make no mistake, Florida has one of the best home venues in the conference, country and possibly the entire planet — where only Gators get out alive.
