Defending champion Nancy Cox of Ponte Vedra Beach and Sadaly Campbell of Fernandina Beach used flawless back nines at the Jacksonville Golf and Country Club on July 21 to tie for the 36-hole lead in the First Coast Women’s Amateur at even-par 144.
They have a one-shot lead over Chloe Schiavone of Jacksonville (73). University of North Florida junor Brianna Castaldi (70, the day’s low round) is 4-over 148 and Stella Moritz of Ponte Vedra Beach (75) and Braydn Smith of Gainesville (75) are 5-over 149.
Neither Cox, who will be a junior at Oklahoma this fall or Campbell, a sophomore at Florida Southeastern, made a bogey on the course’s front nine, their back, and both posted 71s.
Cox made only one bogey, at No. 13, and got it back with a birdie on the next hole. She then made 12 pars and a birdie at No. 1.
Campbell made the most impressive turnaround of the day. After she was 1-under for the day through five holes, she bogeyed Nos. 15 and 18 and double-bogeyed the par-3 17th to turn at 3-over.
She wasted little time in getting those shots back. Campbell birdied Nos. 1 and 2, then added birdies at Nos. 7 and 8.
In the senior division, reigning U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur champion Dawn Woodard of Greenville, S.C., shot 71 with four birdies and leads by three shots over Mary Jane Hiestand of Naples (74) at 1-over 145. Therese Quinn of Jacksonville (76) and Laura Coble of Augusta, Ga., (77) are 8-over.
The final round will be on July 22, with a 9 a.m. shotgun start.
