What started as a record 48-team field is down to eight nations still playing for a spot in New York (OK, New Jersey) and a shot at becoming World Cup champions.
Soccer fans have tuned in and turned out en masse for one of the most exciting installments in the global tournament’s history. The excitement reached a new high when Lionel Messi and defending champion Argentina, fresh off a thrilling victory against beloved underdog Cape Verde in Miami, staged a furious comeback from two goals down against Mohamed Salah’s Egypt to win in the final minutes.
None of the three host nations escaped the Round of 16, with Mexico coming up short to Jude Bellingham and England at the fabled Estadio Azteca, Canada getting torn apart by Morocco and Team USA falling on its face in a 4-1 humiliation against Belgium. Some heavy favorites and major stars bowed out earlier than expected as well: five-time champ Brazil fell victim to Erling Haaland and Norway, four-time winner Germany was shocked by Paraguay in penalty kicks, and Cristiano Ronaldo saw his international career end (we think) in Portugal’s 1-0 loss to Spain.

But there’s still plenty of thrills left in this tournament, especially with a possible repeat of the legendary 2022 final in Qatar still in play. Messi leads the Golden Boot race with eight goals (part of his all-time record 21), though France’s Kylian Mbappe remains hot on his tail with seven. Two other contenders — Norway’s Erling Haaland (seven) and England’s Harry Kane (six) — will square off in Miami over the weekend.
It all builds up to the final July 19, the last of 104 games across 39 days in the biggest World Cup ever. Here’s what to know about where things stand, including an updated look at the World Cup schedule.
