Way-too-early 2026 Bucs game preview: Pittsburgh Steelers

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers will return home in Week 6 for another physical AFC matchup as the Pittsburgh Steelers come to Raymond James Stadium. After a difficult Thursday Night Football road trip to Dallas in Week 5, the Buccaneers now face a Steelers team known for toughness, physical defense, and disciplined football.

The Storyline

There are multiple storylines surrounding this matchup, beginning with Buccaneers special teams coordinator Danny Smith facing the franchise he spent years coaching with in Pittsburgh. Smith was a longtime member of Mike Tomlin’s staff and helped oversee one of the NFL’s most respected special teams units during his tenure with the Steelers. Now, he gets an opportunity to face his former organization for the first time since joining Tampa Bay.

There is also the Jamel Dean storyline. After spending years in Tampa Bay’s secondary, Dean signed with Pittsburgh in free agency and now returns to Raymond James Stadium as a member of the Steelers. Dean’s familiarity with the Buccaneers offense and several of Tampa Bay’s receivers could add another interesting layer to the matchup.

Key Matchups

Buccaneers offensive line vs Steelers front seven

Pittsburgh’s defense consistently creates pressure and chaos near the line of scrimmage, meaning Tampa Bay’s offensive line must protect Baker Mayfield. If the Buccaneers cannot establish balance offensively, the Steelers’ pass rush could quickly take over. Anchored by TJ Watt, Alex Highsmith, and the timeless Cameron Heyward, the offensive line will need to expand with the help of tight ends to help chip.

Buccaneers receivers vs Jamel Dean and Steelers secondary

Dean’s familiarity with Tampa Bay’s offensive concepts and personnel makes this an intriguing matchup. The Buccaneers’ younger receivers, including Emeka Egbuka, Jalen McMillan, and rookie Ted Hurst, will need to consistently create separation against a physical Pittsburgh secondary. Chris Godwin Jr will be the veteran entering the season and will likely draw the most attention from the Steelers. Getting the ball to their biggest playmakers in space will be key to forcing the Steelers secondary to play more aggressively and, in turn, open up opportunities.

Keys to Winning

For Tampa Bay, avoiding mistakes will be critical. The Steelers thrive on winning field position, forcing turnovers, and making games ugly physically. The Buccaneers cannot afford careless penalties or giveaways that let Pittsburgh control the momentum. Defensively, Todd Bowles’ unit must remain disciplined against Pittsburgh’s balanced offensive attack and avoid allowing the Steelers to dictate tempo. Most importantly, Tampa Bay needs to match Pittsburgh’s physicality from the opening snap. Games against the Steelers often turn into full 60-minute battles, and the Buccaneers will need to prove they can handle that style of football while protecting home field.
