There has been speculation recently that the Jacksonville Jaguars could emerge as a potential suitor for Philadelphia Eagles’ wide receiver AJ Brown.
Throughout the offseason, the expectation has been that the Eagles will trade Brown to the New England Patriots after June 1st for salary cap purposes.
As of now, this is all just conjecture when it comes to the Jaguars, but what does ESPN’s Adam Schefter have to say about the matter? He shared his thoughts on his latest podcast episode.
“Now we’re starting to hear about other teams entering the mix,” Schefter said. “I was on a Philadelphia radio show this morning. They brought up the idea that the Rams could be getting back in. They brought up the idea that the Jaguars could be getting back in. All of a sudden, that’s interesting. I will remain in the camp that we’ve been in for the last six, seven weeks, which is that I still think he’s getting traded. I still think he’s getting traded on or shortly after June 1st. I still think that the New England Patriots are going away as the lead contender to land A.J. Brown this offseason.”
GM James Gladstone has shown a willingness to explore big trade opportunities. That said, Brown comes with a hefty contract that the Jaguars would have to absorb.
In addition to that, the trade may require the Jaguars to part with Brian Thomas Jr., which the team has stated on numerous occasions dating back to last year’s trade deadline that they do not want to move on from the talented third-year wideout.
Lastly, the Jaguars’ receiver room is positioned well. This is far from a need, not to mention that in Liam Coen’s offense, a true No. 1 wideout isn’t required, with the ball being spread around based on what the matchup and coverages dictate.
“These other teams have had their opportunities throughout the offseason,” Schefter added. “There were conversations with the Rams that did not result in a deal. I don’t know about Jacksonville, I don’t even know where that’s coming from. But I still think that the New England Patriots make the most sense.”
