A dozen Brevard County Sheriff’s Office vehicles swarmed Viera Charter School on Friday, Feb. 6, triggering lockdowns at neighboring Viera locations.
Brevard County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Tod Goodyear said deputies at the scene investigated a “possible threat” at the school that was heard over a radio signal.
“It has been cleared. Investigating to see if it was a hoax or a bleed over on a walkie talkie or radio channel,” Goodyear said via text.
Viera Charter School chairman Robert Jordan said deputies were investigating reports of a person on the roof of a building making threats over a radio signal. He noted that Viera High was also impacted.
“We both were put on lockdown,” Jordan said of Viera Charter and Viera High.
“They walked through our school to make sure everything was okay, and they did the same at Viera High,” he added.
Viera High School was placed under lockdown just after 6 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 6, with school officials directing students not to attend sporting events, before the lockdown was lifted around 6:50 p.m.
Space Coast United Soccer also closed its fields in response to the activity.
At Viera Charter School, the police activity was focused at the Elementary Building A, facing the Brevard County courthouse. At 7:10 p.m., deputies let a group of roughly 20 adults and children return to school grounds from a Breslay Drive sidewalk.
As of 7:35 p.m., five deputies remained around the entrance at Viera Charter. At 7:40 p.m., the deputies had left the school’s entrance.
