Two people are dead the afternoon of June 29 after a crash that caused a traffic shutdown for all lanes of Florida’s Turnpike in Martin County, according to the Martin County Sheriff’s Office and Florida Highway Patrol.
The crash happened just south of the Palm City exit at Martin Downs Boulevard, the sheriff’s office stated. The FHP reported being called to the crash at 3:12 p.m.
Martin County Fire Rescue officials reported one person with traumatic injuries was taken by ground ambulance to a hospital.
All northbound lanes are closed, but the southbound lanes have opened as of about 5:20 p.m., according to the Martin County Sheriff’s Office and Martin County Fire Rescue.
The crash comes several hours after another deadly crash on the Turnpike in Martin County.
FHP officials about 1:15 a.m. went to that incident about 2 miles south of Becker Road.
The crash happened as a 41-year-old Palm City man drove a 2018 Nissan Rogue sport utility vehicle north and approached a northbound semi-truck.
A 38-year-old Leesburg man drove the semi-truck.
“For undetermined reasons, the front of the Nissan collided with the rear of the semi-(truck),” the FHP stated.
The Nissan driver was taken to Florida Coast Medical Center in Port St. Lucie where he died at 1:55 a.m.
The semi-truck driver reported no injuries, according to the FHP.
No other information was immediately available.
