Tropical Depression 7 wasted no time Wednesday, Sept. 17, quickly strengthening into Tropical Storm Gabrielle, according to the latest advisory from the National Hurricane Center.
Forecasters predict it will become a hurricane over the weekend. If it does, that will make it the second hurricane of the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season. Erin became a hurricane Aug. 15, four days after becoming a tropical storm.
Gabrielle is the seventh named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season. Once maximum sustained winds reach 74 mph, it will be classified as a hurricane.

Forecasters are currently predicting a dip in the jet stream could send Gabrielle north into the Atlantic, keeping it away from Florida and the U.S.
“The development of this system breaks a nearly three-week streak of no tropical cyclones in the Atlantic basin during the peak of the hurricane season,” according to the National Hurricane Center and

National Hurricane Center: Tropical Storm Gabrielle expected to become hurricane
At 5 p.m., At 5 p.m., the center of Tropical Storm Gabrielle was located near latitude 19.4 North, longitude 48.0 West.
Gabrielle is moving toward the northwest near 14 mph, and a northwest or west-northwest motion is expected to continue over the next few days.
Satellite data indicate that the maximum sustained winds have increased to near 50 mph with higher gusts. Little change in strength is forecast during the next 48 hours, but some gradual intensification is forecast over the weekend.
Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 205 miles from the center, primarily in the eastern semicircle of the storm.
The estimated minimum central pressure is 1005 mb.
What can Naples, Marco Island and Collier County, Florida expect from Tropical Storm Gabrielle?
The National Hurricane Center’s forecast calls for Gabrielle to strengthen into a hurricane over the weekend.
A turn to the northwest is expected to occur soon, followed by a turn to the west-northwest later this week and then another turn to the north or northwest as environmental conditions affect its path, according to the National Hurricane Center.
“There is high confidence that this system should pass well east of the Windward and Leeward Islands,” keeping it away from Florida and the United States, the Hurricane Center said.
Residents in Bermuda were advised to monitor the forecasts over the next several days.
