U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi posted Sept. 14 on X a picture of a tribute to the late Charlie Kirk above the east entrance to the tunnel from Norman Hall to the main University of Florida campus.
Kirk, a conservative activist and CEO and co-founder of Turning Point USA, was killed by single gunshot to the neck on Sept. 10 while speaking at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah, about 40 miles south of Salt Lake City.
The post by Bondi, a UF grad, shows the tunnel with “Charles James Kirk / Say His Name” written in white letters on a black background. The post has more than 2 million views and has been reposted nearly 9,000 times. Fox News reposted the message on its Facebook page the morning of Sept. 16.
The message has since been painted over and altered to read “Heisenberg.”
“Heisenberg” is possibly a reference to the alter-ego of the character Walter White, the protaganist and anti-hero of the hit AMC series “Breaking Bad.” Coincidentally, actor Bryan Cranston, who portrayed Walter White, appeared at the O’Connell Center on Aug. 21 as part of an event sponsored by UF Student Government’s ACCENT Speakers Bureau.
By mid-morning Sept. 17, all that was left of the message was “berg.”
The UF chapter of Turning Point USA hosted a vigil on Sept. 11 in honor of Kirk on UF’s Plaza of the Americas, the same place Kirk spoke during a campus visit in February.
