FSU baseball's offense comes alive in run-rule win over Notre Dame

Wes Mendes threw six scoreless innings, and Florida State baseball’s bats got hot as the Seminoles run-ruled Notre Dame, 11-0, on Friday, April 17.

Mendes went deep into his start at Dick Howser Stadium, recording seven strikeouts, two walks issued, and three hits allowed. He worked around trouble on the base paths in the third and fifth innings, with Notre Dame runners getting into scoring position in both frames, but unable to scratch a run across.

The Seminoles recorded 13 hits, with the only batter not to record a hit being Hunter Carns. Despite going 0-4, he hit into a pair of fielder’s choice that got him on base, and he scored twice.

Nathan Cmeyla knocked in three runs on two hits, a single and a double, and he finished the night 3-for-4 with his three RBI from the designated hitter spot. He was the biggest spark of offense for the Seminoles until the sixth inning, when FSU scored seven runs, including a pair of home runs.

After an RBI single from Cmeyla, John Stuetzer hit his third home run in the last week, and eighth of the season, in the sixth inning. He finished the game 1-for-4 with three RBI on his home run.

Back-to-back singles from Cal Fisher and Gabe Fraser put a pair on for Eli Putnam with two outs. He uncorked his sixth home run of the season, and it nearly hit the scoreboard in right field to score a pair and put FSU ahead 11-0 with two outs in the sixth.

Brodie Purcell replaced Mendes in the seventh, and after a leadoff double and a single, he bounced back with a pop-out and a pair of strikeouts to secure game one of the series for the Seminoles.
