The message was clear: We Won’t Go Back.
On March 30, the messengers took to the Eau Gallie Causeway, with the opening steps of a flag-fronted march honoring Transgender Day of Visibility captured by Malcolm Denemark, FLORIDA TODAY senior photographer. Pre-march, around 250 people gathered at Eau Gallie Square Park for music, speakers and support.
International Transgender Day of Visibility has been observed on March 31 since 2010. The statements emblazoned on posters, placards, caps and T-shirts on this day spoke of their importance to participants in tenuous times: This is Me. Existence That Requires Bravery Isn’t Freedom. Jesus is an Ally.
“Visibility is life, now more than ever,” said Shelley Rodden, youth director for event organizer Space Coast Pride, as participants made their way toward the causeway.
“It’s standing up for our community, even when it’s uncomfortable.”
