A Tallahassee man has been sentenced to 15 years for stealing wigs and mannequin heads from a beauty supply store, prosecutors said.
Darius Sheldon McKenzie, 31, was found guilty of burglary of an occupied structure and petit theft, according to a news release from the State Attorney’s Office for the 2nd Judicial Circuit.
On Jan. 23, McKenzie was joined by a woman as they entered Cali’s Beauty Supply. He was wearing a blue cap, a shirt with a Honda logo, a camouflage face-covering and “distinctive” shoes, the release said.
Inside, the woman pointed out a number of items to McKenzie that were held behind a counter, and only accessible to employees. The woman then left the store and he proceeded to go behind the counter, grabbing several wigs and mannequin heads, prosecutors said.
McKenzie was found later in the day, wearing the same clothes, walking in the area of Mission Street and Tharpe Street, An officer with the Tallahassee Police Department responded, leading to McKenzie jumping a fence to flee.
He dropped the hat and took off his shirt somewhere in the woods but was later arrested with the face covering in his back pocket and wearing the same shoes.
Records later showed he had been released from state prison just months before, on Aug. 25, 2025.
Assistant State Attorney Patsey E. Jacobs prosecuted; McKenzie was represented by Kathryn Larsen and Parker Johnson. Special Judge David Green presided.
