A 32-year-old Sarasota man faces charges of being impaired when he struck a state trooper overnight on I-75, FHP says.
Jonathan Ronald Munas, was arrested April 12 on suspicion of DUI (with a 0.159 blood-alcohol content) and taken to the Collier County Jail, Florida Highway Patrol said in a news release.
The trooper had stopped his FHP Dodge Charger, with blue emergency lights activated, at 3:18 a.m. April 12. The Charger was positioned at an angle, on the outside Interstate 75 travel lane and paved shoulder, the news release said.
The trooper of Collier County was standing outside his Charger on the paved shoulder to assist a stopped motorist at mile marker 64 along Alligator Alley in Collier, the FHP release said.
About the same time, Munas was driving a Toyota north on I-75 on the outside travel line, approaching mile marker 64, the trooper and his car, FHP said in the release.
The right front of the Toyota hit the left front side of the FHP Charger. The force of the impact separated the left front tire and bumper of the police cruiser, the release said.
Debris from the collision hit the trooper that caused serious injuries, so he who was taken to a hospital.
The crash remains under investigation.
