MIAMI GARDENS — The “end zone” was just beyond a couple of tackling dummies, roughly where the 50-yard line normally is, but Miami Dolphins players and Formula 1 drivers didn’t care, celebrating each run through a drivers/players obstacle course like a touchdown in a game that actually counts.
That was the scene Thursday, April 30, as festivities revved up for the fifth annual Miami Grand Prix around Hard Rock Stadium this weekend.
“It was cool,” Dolphins running back Ollie Gordon II said. “We got to interact with some of the drivers, meet them and hopefully calm their mood for driving this weekend.”
What did the Dolphins players learn about the drivers?
“They’re real genuine people,” Gordon said. “They’re definitely people outside of racing, which is cool to meet sometimes, especially with them getting all the exposure they get.”
And what did drivers learn from the players?
“Hopefully some celebrations,” Gordon said. “You gotta bring out a good celebration every time.”
Kimi Antonelli, who leads the F1 point standings, did just that. He “won” the competition and was given a victory ride on the shoulders of several Dolphins, who took turns navigating a tiny oval in mini-cars while drivers tried their hand racing through football obstacles.
