Sarasota firefighter gets emotional homecoming after emergency

A Sarasota County Fire Department firefighter was discharged from Sarasota Memorial Hospital on Thursday, Aug. 6, and greeted by a large community of supporters.

Lieutenant Clay Huber experienced a medical emergency while responding to a structure fire on Sunday, Aug. 2. Sarasota County Emergency Services stated that he was transported to Sarasota Memorial Hospital and was in stable condition on Sunday in a social media post. 

Lt. Huber was discharged from the hospital four days later, and as he left, he was surrounded by nearly 100 fellow firefighters, EMTs, paramedics, other first responders, other departments and Sarasota Memorial Hospital staff who sent him home with cheers, applause, and an overwhelming show of support.

“We are incredibly grateful for the outpouring of support from our community, partner agencies, and everyone who has kept Lt. Huber, his family, and our personnel in their thoughts,” Sarasota County said in a press release.

“His homecoming is a powerful reminder of the strength of the fire service family and the community we are proud to serve.”

Sarasota County also extended its appreciation to the physicians, nurses and staff at Sarasota Memorial Hospital for the care they provided throughout Lt. Huber’s recovery.
