A male pedestrian was struck twice and died from his injuries early June 16 on U.S. 27/441.
Local authorities are now searching for the driver of the second vehicle who fled the scene.
The fatal crash occurred at approximately 3:26 a.m. on June 16 near Hartsock Sawmill Road.
According to a preliminary investigation by the Lady Lake Police Department, the victim was wearing dark clothing and standing motionless in the middle lane of the unlit highway. The driver of a southbound gray 2023 Toyota Tacoma, traveling between 50 mph and 55 mph, spotted the man but was unable to swerve in time to avoid hitting him.
The driver of the Tacoma immediately stopped, and her passenger went to check on the injured man while dialing 911.
Shortly after the initial impact, a second southbound vehicle struck the victim and continued driving without stopping, according to Lady Lake Police.
The victim was taken to UF Health Leesburg Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His identity had not yet been released as of 2 p.m. June 16.
The Lady Lake Police Department’s Traffic Homicide Unit is investigating. Anyone who witnessed the crash or has information regarding the second vehicle is asked to contact the Lady Lake Police Department at 352-751-1560 (leave a message for Officer Dennis Pranouskes).
