PGA Tour confirms SBJ report of nearly 60 employees laid off

The PGA Tour has downsized its staff by around 4%, laying off 56 full-time employees and leaving 73 positions that had been advertised unfilled.

Sports Business Journal first reported the news. The Tour confirmed the report on the number of layoffs and open positions to the Times-Union but declined to comment further.

The Tour employs around 1,300 globally and around 800 in Ponte Vedra Beach.

According to an internal memo obtained by the Sports Business Journal, the affected employees were informed on April 23 and CEO Brian Rolapp sent an email to the entire staff of the decision.

Rolapp said in the email to his staff, according to the Sports Business Journal, that the moves were a “difficult but important step” in the Tour’s move from a 501(c)6 non-profit to a for-profit model. In the email, Rolapp said he would hold a staff meeting on May 11 to provide further information.
