An Auburndale man died May 31 in a single-vehicle crash near Winter Haven, the Polk County Sheriff’s Office reported.

First responders were dispatched at 3:02 a.m. to the crash scene on Thornhill Road, just north of Sugar Creek Road, PCSO said in a news release. Upon their arrival, they found the driver dead in his vehicle.

PCSO identified the driver as Gibran Trevino Hernandez, 33, of Auburndale.

The preliminary investigation shows that a gray Toyota Corolla had been traveling south on Thornhill Road when the driver failed to negotiate a curve and left the roadway. The driver’s side of the car made impact with a large tree, PCSO said.

The driver was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. Thornhill Road was closed for approximately three hours. The investigation remains ongoing, PCSO said.
