The future is pretty unclear for former Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby right now.
He’s been ruled ineligible by the NCAA, parted ways with the Red Raiders, and been denied a spot in the NFL supplemental draft. Until the 2027 NFL Draft, there were only a couple of options for the Cincinnati Bearcats transfer: wait it out and train on his own time, or try to join the Canadian Football League or the United Football League.
Now, one of those options is out as well.
On Friday, the CFL announced that it will not allow any of its teams to sign Sorsby to a contract this year, according to USA TODAY.
“Upholding the integrity of the league and ensuring fair competition are paramount to the CFL. The allegations involving Brendan Sorsby are serious and concerning,” said the league. “At this time, the CFL will not register a contract for him, and no team will be permitted to add him to its negotiation list.”
Sorsby was ruled ineligible by the NCAA after admitting to gambling on his own team while with the Indiana Hoosiers; however, he was granted a temporary injunction, which cleared the path for him to play the 2026 season at Texas Tech. Following some significant backlash, though, Sorsby and the Red Raiders announced that they would be parting ways, with Sorsby looking toward the NFL supplemental draft instead.
And then that door closed.
Now, it appears that the most likely path forward for Sorsby is to wait until next April and hope to hear his name called in the 2027 NFL Draft. Until then, though, it will be a lot of waiting ahead.
