One word to describe the 2025 Jacksonville Jaguars

What is one word you would use to describe the 2025 Jacksonville Jaguars?

For me, I’ll go with “multiplicity.”

That is going to be a cornerstone element on both the offensive and defensive sides of the football, and in short, what I mean by that is keeping the opponent off balance and guessing by throwing a variety of different looks at them.

Within the Sean McVay coaching tree, where Liam Coen has his roots, there is the phrase “illusion of complexity.” The concepts from an offensive perspective can be relatively “simple” once learned, but visually, it throws a lot at defenses.

This can be accomplished by running a number of plays from just a few personnel packages, which helps to create mismatches and makes it difficult for defenses to get a beat on what’s coming, with each player able to fill a variety of roles.

There are also like-plays, or concepts that build off each other as the game goes on. A play in the first quarter and a play in the third quarter may look and begin quite similarly, but they end up being quite different, which again keeps a defense guessing.

“We’ll be multiple and want to be a complete offense in the sense that we have the ability to attack defenses in a variety of ways,” said offensive coordinator Grant Udinski.

“You need to have all the tools in the bag, and then take those tools and fit them to the players that you have. How can we take what our guys execute, what our guys execute well, and put those players in the best position for success.”

The Jaguars’ defense under Anthony Campanile will have its own form of multiplicity, with this being a very malleable defensive scheme.

Like any coordinator, Campanile has core principles that his system is built around, but the scheme will be flexible as well, and mold to the skill sets he has on the roster and also to what each opponent does from a game planning perspective.

This can result in players being tasked with different roles, depending on what the matchups dictate, and there being more blitzing, simulated pressures, movement up front, and disguising of coverages in order to put a lot of different looks on the offense’s plate.

The players are the ones who make the plays, but schematically on both sides of the ball for this new-look Jaguars team, the systems that Coen and Campanile are implementing can help shoulder some of that playmaking burden by putting the players regularly in positions to be successful where their skill sets can take over.
