The Social Vegan has flipped the script, making a departure from its plant-only roots to introduce a new vibe where “social meets class.”
Rebranded as The SV Lounge, the revived space caters to all the grown folks with a versatile menu that keeps the vegan menu but also ushers in non-vegan items, a new dress code and a lineup of nightlife events on deck.
“We want people to know that they have a place,” co-owner Samirah Ali said in an interview with the Tallahassee Democrat, describing her mission to provide a space for connection and entertainment. “We really want to cater to grown people and have a good place where you can come out, have a nice vibe and not be afraid to socialize.”
Social Vegan was founded by siblings Ali and Frank Hall in 2022. During this time it was positioned as a family-friendly establishment with a menu that puts a vegan twist to commonly served items, such as vegan chicken and waffles, Cajun shrimp linguini and the social sausage dog.
The introduction of non-vegan foods to the plant-based restaurant was the biggest addition.
No worries, that welcoming approach and flavor-packed menu remain, but now it caters to those 30 and up. While the age restriction is not strictly enforced, it is requested that guest be at least 21 and up.
After conducting surveys with local chefs and garnering feedback from patrons looking for other entrees, they determined a new menu fitting for all. The newest additions include things like chicken wings and shrimp. The most popular so far is the lamb chops.
“Every entity has its own signature taste. We have a signature taste in vegan foods,” Ali said. “We’ll also incorporate that into the non-vegan foods.”
Beyond boosting revenue, the siblings are “redefining what it means to dine and unwind in Tallahassee” by creating a space outside of those overflowing with college students.
“I want to cater to grown people — the locals — not just college students. We have a lot of professionals here,” Ali said.
Outside of fare, an extended bar with top shelf liquor and the outdoor patio with options to watch televisions, enjoy a live concert or smoke a little hookah are the newest attractions.
They hope to incorporate events where people can doll up and come out for Taco Tuesdays, watch parties for sports events and Sunday brunches. This summer they’re hosting a six-week music series where every Thursday patrons can hear live music from R&B group Legacy Band.
The series ends July 10.
“Our vision for The SV Lounge was to create a space where the community can come together to relax, connect, and celebrate life’s moments in style,” Ali said.
