NASCAR qualifying results set starting lineup for Watkins Glen race

No surprise when it comes to NASCAR’s Watkins Glen pole winner.

Road-course ace Shane van Gisbergen laid down the fastest qualifying lap among the 38 entrants for the Cup Series’ Go Bowling at The Glen.

He will be joined on the front row by Michael McDowell.

Austin Cindric qualified third, and SVG’s Trackhouse Racing teammates, Ross Chastain and Connor Zilisch, rounded out the top five.

Watkins Glen is located in south-central New York state, on the southern tip of Lake Seneca, one of the Finger Lakes. The track is officially known as Watkins Glen International, and international it has been. It was host to the Formula One U.S. Grand Prix from 1961-80.

The Glen’s NASCAR relationship, in retrospect, seemed a little tentative at first. There was a debut Cup race in 1957, won by Buck Baker, and two more in the mid-’60s, won by Marvin Panch and Billy Wade. But it wasn’t until 1986 until NASCAR returned and made the road course an annual stop.

Tony Stewart’s five career Cup wins are the most of any NASCAR driver.
