Men at Work, World Oddities Expo on tap this weekend in Jacksonville

If you turned on MTV for even a minute back in the ’80s, you probably remember the video of the bug-eyed Australian guy singing about plunder, thunder and Vegemite sandwiches.

Colin Hay was that singer, and he’s still leading Men at Work, albeit with an entirely different lineup of musicians than in those bygone days. They’re at the St. Augustine Amphitheatre at 6:30 p.m. Friday, with Toad the Wet Sprocket and Shonen Knife opening the show. Tickets are $60-$162.

Oddly enough, that’s not the only MTV-era band playing Friday night. The Fixx, which was all over MTV with “Saved by Zero” and “One Thing Leads to Another,” is at the Ponte Vedra Concert Hall. Showtime is 7:30 p.m. and tickets are $66-$149. The St. Augustine Amphitheatre and the Ponte Vedra Concert Hall are both managed and operated by SJC Cultural Events, Inc., which essentially programmed against itself Friday night.

Other shows this weekend:

‘The Parent Trap’

7 p.m. Friday, July 17, at Artist Walk. Free.

Head under the Fuller Warren Bridge off Riverside Avenue to watch the Disney film about identical twin sisters who find each other at summer camp (the 1998 one with Lindsay Lohan, not the ’61 original with Hayley Mills). Bring your own chairs or blankets; the city will provide the popcorn. Info: jacksonville.gov

Live laughs

Bassem Youssef, 7:15 and 9:45 p.m. Friday, July 17; 7 and 9:30 p.m. Saturday, July 18, at the Comedy Zone. $41.50-$57.50.

Andy Beningo, 7 p.m. Saturday, July 18, at the Murray Hill Theatre. $20.

We’ve got two varieties of comedy on the menu this weekend. At the Comedy Zone in Mandarin, Youssef plays four shows in two nights. He founded the first online political satire show in the Middle East, authored a children’s book and sold 100,000 tickets to his last stand-up tour. At the Murray Hill Theatre, which is an alcohol-free Christian venue, Beningo promises a 100-percent clean show. Info: comedyzone.com, murrayhilltheatre.com

World Oddities Expo

11 a.m. Saturday, July 18, and Sunday, July 19, at the Prime Osborn Convention Center. $25.

If you are really into the weird and unusual, this is the place for you to be this weekend. The event includes the “De-Formed Exhibit” of animal medical anomalies, live performances and classes where you can learn butterfly pinning, owl-pellet dissection and rat taxidermy. Jacksonville Sharks

7 p.m. Saturday, July 18, at VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena. $15-$150.

One of the grand old teams of indoor football, the Iowa Barnstormers, are visiting Jacksonville to take on the hometown Sharks (but the Barnstormers are 1-13 so far this season). It’s Hawaiian Night, so dress in your favorite loud shirt (or buy one on-site for $50). Free leis while they last. Info: jaxsharks.com

Night Under the Stars

8:30 p.m. Saturday, July 18, at the Equestrian Center Community Room, Hastings. Free.

If you think there are a lot of stars in the heavens over Jacksonville, you should see what it looks like in Hastings, where there isn’t nearly as much light pollution. St. Augustine’s Ancient City Astronomy Club leads an Astronomy 101 class, explaining what is up there. It’s open to all ages, but participants must register separately. Info: secure.rec1.com
