1. The Downtown Concert Series winds up
Tallahassee’s Downtown Concert Series is back for its final show of the 10th season from 7-10 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 23, at The Adderley Amphitheater in Cascades Park. The Retrograde will headline, and Peak Dive will open. BYOB, picnic blanket, chairs, and friends to the free concert. Snack away at the delicious food offered at trucks on-site and enjoy the sounds of a late summer evening.
2. Birthday fun at The Sound Bar
The beat goes on at The Sound Bar at 1105 Tharpe Street as they work out a few operating details. This week it’s Queen High Straight at 9 p.m. Friday, Aug. 22. $10 cover. At 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 23, Tallahassee Vinyl Club will be on hand for Operation Roots & Culture. Be there to help celebrate Brett Wellman’s Birthday Bash, which gets going at 8 p.m.
3. Calling all Parrotheads
The Tallahassee Parrothead Club presents the 19th annual Parrothead Phrenzy, a concert to benefit Alzheimer’s Project, at 7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 23, at The Moon, 1105 E. 4. Catch jazzy Quanta, indie June Star
Chris Seepersaud and “The Drummer on the Moove” Marlon Williams crank up happy hour at Blue Tavern, 1206 N. Monroe St., from 5-7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 22, followed at 8 p.m. by a weekend gig from Quanta with blues, jazz, and a few originals. Jack Quine will be playing piano and singing. Richard Bertram will be adding his versatile instrumental skills on sax, clarinet, bass, and percussion to the mix. $10 cover.
Runaway Biscuits is hosting the 4th Saturday Old Time Jam at 4 p.m., followed from 8-11 p.m. by Americana and alt-country tunes from Baltimore’s June Star (Andrew Grimm and Dave Hadley). The duo’s aching vocals and plaintive folk arrangements feature Grimm’s rich baritone voice and Hadley’s atmospheric, elegiac pedal steel. Be captivated by tales of fractious love, quixotic anxiety, and the power of redemption. $10 cover.
5. A fresh breath of ‘Palm Tree Country’
Get ready for “Palm Tree Country” when Scott Carswell and Six String Southern Productions present country superstar Brian Kelley and his headlining Sunshine State of Mind Tour at The Moon in Tallahassee on Thursday, Aug. 28. The former Florida George Line singer and solo artist mixes twang and tan lines for the ultimate getaway anthem. The breezy beachfront ballad was written by Kelley with Jake Rose, Blake Redferrin, and Canaan Smith.
