A Rockledge school crossing guard remains hospitalized after being struck by a vehicle while directing traffic near Golfview Elementary School.
The incident happened at about 7:30 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 5, as Joyce Scarborough was directing traffic for students at the school on South Fiske Boulevard. The 74-year-old longtime crossing guard, known to students and others as the “Crazy Sock Lady,” was transported to Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne, police reported.
“She was hit by a car this morning in front of Golfview Elementary while directing traffic and helping the kids on their way to school,” her son, Scott Scarborough, wrote in an GoFundMe appeal on Thursday.
“She is currently in ICU and has a long road to recovery.”
While most of the medical expenses will be covered by Scarborough’s worker’s compensation insurance, there will be other financial burdens, her son wrote.
“This will be a life-altering event for my parents. My father is unable to work and I cannot overstate the financial impact this will have on them,” he said.
The GoFundMe account had raised nearly $9,000 by Friday morning.
Rockledge police continue to investigate but have not released circumstances leading to the crash. The unidentified driver of the vehicle remained on site following the incident, police said.
“At this time, the department is focused on our employee’s recovery and assisting the family,” Rockledge Police Chief Christopher Crawford said in a statement released Thursday.
